Ionian University and, in particular, the Institute for Games Research and the Department of Audio & Visual Arts are at the center of the show “Syntheseis” with Makis Provatas on ERTnews. The special feature is broadcast in two parts, on Saturday 13 June (Part A) and Saturday 20 June (Part B), at 23:00.
Filmed in Corfu, the feature travels into the world of Artificial Intelligence and creative technologies: how AI is changing the way we create image, sound, narrative, and games, and how research at Ionian University turns these technologies into tools for expression, education, and culture. Characteristically, the episode’s trailer opens with the show itself introducing itself in different languages through Artificial Intelligence — a small demonstration of the Institute’s researchers’ capabilities regarding what “creation with AI” actually means in practice.
Part A (Saturday 13 June): At the “Syntheseis” table, technology meets philosophy. Ioannis Deliyannis, Professor in the Department of Audio & Visual Arts at Ionian University and Director of the Institute for Games Research, whose work focuses on game design, interactive digital storytelling with Artificial Intelligence, and educational technologies, talks with Theofanis Tassis, Assistant Professor of Philosophy of Information and Digital Humanities in the same Department. With research in Digital Humanities and the Philosophy of Artificial Intelligence, studies in Physics and a PhD in Philosophy (summa cum laude) from Freie Universität Berlin, and a research trajectory at Princeton, St. Gallen, and Klagenfurt, Theofanis Tassis sheds light on the ethical, cultural, and anthropological dimensions of AI. Together, the two speakers examine both the potential and the questions that Artificial Intelligence raises for creativity, the new generation, and its responsible use.
Part B (Saturday 20 June): The floor passes to the new generation of creators. Students and young researchers of Ionian University present and discuss their research in practice, showing how theory becomes real work — from the conception of the idea to its implementation with contemporary digital technologies and AI tools.
True to the spirit of “Syntheseis”, which seeks out what deserves to be heard in scientific, social, and ethical matters, the two meetings do not remain at the level of technological impression, but open a substantial dialogue about the place of the human being in the age of Artificial Intelligence.
“Artificial Intelligence does not replace creativity; it extends it. What interests us at Ionian University is how young creators can use it with knowledge and responsibility — from digital storytelling to games,” notes Ioannis Deliyannis.
